University of Abuja (or UNIABUJA) is a degree awarding institution located in Abuja, the Capital City of Nigeria.

It was founded on 1st January, 1988 though the decree establishing it was passed much earlier. The University started running fully in 1990 by matriculating its first set of graduates.

The University has 2 campuses – the Main campus located along the Airport Road covering about 11,824 hectares and the mini Campus at Gwagwalada.

Furthermore, the Main campus has some faculties like Arts, Science, Veterinary Medicine, Agriculture, College of Medicine and the school senate while temporary location contains the faculties of Social Science, Management, Education, Law, medical facilities, school hostels, football field, lawn tennis court and volleyball pitch.

University of Abuja also offers sandwich, remedial, and diploma programmes. The school also offers a Distance Learning Programme which enables people far to enroll in their programs.

UNIABUJA has a student population of 14,000. Also, the motto of the University of Abuja is For Unity and Scholarship. Like every other Nigerian university, the school has a senate, which is the highest decision-making authority of the school, a Chancellor who is the overall and ceremonial head of the school as well as a Vice-Chancellor who oversees the daily running of the school.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja is Professor Michael Umale Adikwu.

UNIABUJA Accreditation

With the decree establishing this institution, it was approved by the Federal Government of Nigeria. But after the expansion of the University, new courses were introduced, so there was a need for those courses to be approved as well by regulatory bodies like COREN and NUC.

The initial challenge faced by University of Abuja was the accreditation to courses in Agriculture, Engineering and Veterinary Medicine.

But the Vice-Chancellor at a forum in July, 2015 announced that they had been approved. The departments having accreditation issues now are Medicine, Microbiology, and Law which have remained largely unresolved.

UNIABUJA Hotels And Fees

Just like other Nigerian universities, the University of Abuja provides accommodation for some 3,000 students which indicates that the Halls of Residence provided by the school is barely enough for large numbers of its student population.

Payments for hostel accommodation are made in the school. The school fee for new students of the University of Abuja is N35, 000 to N40, 000 depending on the department.

Note that this figure is not fixed as it is subject to change.

UNIABUJA Ranking

In April 2013, University Web Ranking (Webometrics Ranking) was done by an international body based in Spain which ranks all universities around the world announced that they have ranked 100 Best Nigerian Universities.

In the ranking, the University of Abuja took 61st position. Webometrics always publishes the data collected after each survey twice a year for public view, ranking over 20,000 universities around the world.

UNIABUJA Grading System

Just like many Nigerian universities, University of Abuja uses the NUC standard for grading its students.

This means that for NUC programmes, grading is done on a scale of 5.00. The rundown is shown below:

First Class Division: (100 – 70 with 5.00 – 4.50 CGPA)

Second Class Upper Division: (69 – 60 with 4.49 – 3.50 CGPA)

Second Class Lower Division: (49 – 45 with 3.49 – 2.40 CGPA)

Third Class Division: (49 – 45 with 2.39 – 1.50).

Notice that NUC has since abolished the Pass Grade in Nigerian universities.

This means that any student who scores below 45 in exam is assumed to have failed it.

UNIABUJA Admission Requirement

All prospective UTME candidates of University of Abuja must compulsorily sit for their Post UTME screening test before they are considered for admission.

Candidates from UTME must score 180 and above, and must choose the University as their choice university. Please note that these scores are subject to change from time to time.

And to be considered for admission, all candidates must have 5 Credit passes including English Language and subjects relevant to their course of choice in not more than 2 sittings.

But in 2015/2016 academic session, it will be different as the authorities of the University have announced that there would be no Post UTME exams for students who intend to do one programme or another in the school.

The spokesman of the University, Waziri Garba, explained that JAMB after the redistribution exercise allocated mere 6,000 candidates despite the 16,000 who initially chose the school as the university of choice.

He further explained that the University could admit 4,000, but it would be more expensive to conduct post UTME for 6,000 than 16,000 applicants.

As a result, the school would use the departmental merit lists as cut-off marks in their various departments to determine who is qualified to gain admission.

Furthermore, Direct Entry candidates must possess the same subject requirement above (that is 5 Credit passes in O’ Level) with OND, NCE, HND, etc.

Direct Entry candidates start from 200L in the University unlike the Post UTME candidates who start from 100L.

UNIABUJA Duration Of Studies

The University of Abuja uses the standard of 6-3-3-4 system of education in Nigeria, meaning undergraduates spend at least 4 years doing a program in the University (except Direct Entry candidates).

Also, all other courses offered at the University of Abuja follow this schedule of 4 years, but there are variations in faculties like Law, Engineering, etc. which require 5 years.

UNIABUJA Transcript

As part of continued efforts to serve alumni of the University better and in accordance with international standard, University of Abuja authorities have approved an electronic platform where alumni can place orders of transcripts on ETX-NG Network.

This platform enables all ordered transcripts to be sent electronically to the schools were they are needed. Note also that you can request for transcript in person if you find it more convenient.

But through ETX-NG platform, alumni don’t have to visit the University for their transcripts. Visit http://www.etx-ng.com/uniabuja for more information and the make payment for necessary fees (which is subject to change).

Note that applying for your transcripts online through this medium attracts additional administrative charges.

Click on the Register tab if you wish to apply through this means to get started. And ensure you carefully input your information. Finally, ensure your information is genuine. Note that payments are made using all available cards and platforms as listed on the website.
