1. UAMS College of Medicine

The first University on our list is the UAMS College of Medicine. The University is a medical school that is part of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, a state-run university in the U.S. state of Arkansas and part of the University of Arkansas System.

The main campus is in Little Rock and is associated with UAMS Medical Center, Arkansas Children’s Hospital, and Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System. A branch campus, UAMS Northwest is in Fayetteville.

It is one of three medical schools in Arkansas, with NYITCOM in Jonesboro and Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort Smith being the other two.

The University was established in October 1879 by eight Arkansas physicians, led by Dr P. O. Hooper of Little Rock.

The physicians pooled $5,000 to get the former Sperindo Restaurant and Hotel in downtown Little Rock.

The first site of the medical school at that time was known as the Medical Department of Arkansas Industrial University, which was later renamed the University of Arkansas.

The medical school was instituted in several locations during the early 20th century, with the Old State House.

The former Arkansas State Capitol, before using funding provided by Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Public Works Administration and an Arkansas tax on beer and liquor to build a new campus in 1935 next to the Little Rock City Hospital.

2. UAMS Northwest

The UAMS Northwest campus is not a privately owned university; it is a community-based regional medical campus with a satellite campus of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. 

The institution is situated in the former 325,000-square-foot (30,200 m2) Washington Regional Medical Center close to the VA Hospital in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and is opening in phases, which began in 2009 as part of the approximately $500 million development of the UAMS campus in Little Rock.

A $3 million phase one renovation was finished in 2009 which offered new classroom, student, and office space and permitted the first group of medical students to attend UAMS Northwest that fall.

Part two of the expansion, undertaken in 2011, added students from the colleges of pharmacy, nursing and health professions.

3. Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine

The Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine (ARCOM) is a privately owned, non-profit, medical school for osteopathic medicine situated in Fort Smith, in the U.S. state of Arkansas.

Established in 2014 as a branch of the Arkansas Colleges of Health Education, the school has provisional accreditation with the American Osteopathic Association.

The school opened its doors to its inaugural class of 150 students in August 2017. Graduates of ARCOM will get a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree.

4. University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is part of the University of Arkansas System, a state-run university in the U.S. state of Arkansas.

The major campus is situated in Little Rock and comprises five colleges plus one graduate school, seven institutions, a statewide network of community educational centres, and the UAMS Medical Center.

UAMS was among the foremost medical centre in Arkansas and among the first in the nation to execute a star rating system for UAMS physicians and also it is the only high-risk pregnancy program, the only adult cystic fibrosis centre, and the only liver transplant program in the state of Arkansas.
