When looking at your JAMB Score 2023, it is important for you to understand that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) administers entrance exams in Nigeria for institutions of higher learning.

JAMB administers the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations for candidates applying to undergraduate programs in Nigerian universities.

Over the past few weeks, several UTME applicants have been looking for ways to use their JAMB scores to get into the university institutions of their choice.

In this article, we will enlighten you on your chances of securing admission to the university of your choice.

The JAMB Score Required for Admission in 2023

JAMB is also responsible for conducting comparable tests for candidates for admission to Nigerian public and private polytechnics, monotechnics, and colleges of education.

These applicants must have passed the West Africa Senior School Certificate (WASSCE), which is given annually by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), or the National Examination Council (NECO).

You’ve probably heard that if you score 270 on the JAMB exam, JAMB would automatically includes your name in the first batch of students at the institution of your choice to enroll in the chosen degree.

But, this is untrue. There has been a case where a student who had a score of over 300 in JAMB wasn’t admitted.

Before you say, “Oh! my JAMB score is great” or “Oh! my JAMB score is poor,” there are a few aspects that must be taken into account simultaneously.

We will enumerate these factors and explain them all. These factors are;

  • Applied Course’s Nature
  • Competitiveness of the school you want to attend
  • Student’s Overall Performance

Applied Course’s Nature

How well you should perform on the JAMB exam is influenced by the course you applied for.

Courses like law and pharmacy are quite competitive.

Botany is not competitive in Nigeria, thus students applying to those courses have a lot of work to accomplish. Some of these competitive courses are;

  1. Medicine and Surgery
  2. Law
  3. Pharmacy
  4. Communication arts/ Mass communication
  5. Dentistry / Dental Surgery
  6. Nursing

Competitiveness of the School you want to Attend

Different schools have different levels of competition. Those that applied to universities with a high JAMB application volume, including ABU, UNIBEN, UI, and UNILORIN, have a lot of work to do.

You must be prepared to study hard and perform well if you must apply to these colleges.

Student’s Overall Performance

If the student’s overall academic performance is poor, this will have a significant impact on how high their JAMB score will be.

But if a student’s general performance is extremely strong, falling between 260 and 300, then achieving 270 in JAMB for that year is not that big of a concern.

The JAMB and School departmental cut-off marks will be higher and vice versa, depending on the student success rate.

JAMB Score Required for Admission

Understanding the different elements that influence admission, We have developed a range of scores that are suitable for admission to any institution of your choosing. These factors guided these scores.

  • If you also perform well in your post-UTME, a JAMB score of 300 or higher suffices to guarantee you admission to any course of your choosing.
  • A JAMB score between 250 and 270 can give you a chance to study a competitive course.
  • A moderately competitive course may be available to you with a JAMB score of 200 to 250.

In summary, at least a JAMB score of 280 or above is required to gain admission in 2023 with little difficulty. However, keep in mind that a strong performance in the post-UTME must accompany this score.
