Brief History of NECO

First, in 1997, the Abacha administration set up a panel called the ETSU Nupe. Evidently, the panel was to re-examine the Nigerian education system.

Also, the Federal Government set up a vision 2020 committee on review of Nigeria’s education system.

However, both ad hoc committees observed WAEC’s challenges persisted. Therefore, they gave recommendations on the examination system.

Furthermore, they established an indigenous examination body. Again, this body will parallel WAEC as Nigeria’s home-grown alternative examination body.

Moreso, they published these two committees’ reports in January 1998. Furthermore, they presented a published report at the 46 meeting of the National Council on Education (NCE) held at Abeokuta Ogun state in March 1999.

However, they upgraded National Board for Educational Measurement (NBEM). Thus, making the board a full-scale national examination outfit of the same standard as WAEC. 

Further Details on NECO

Firstly, they planned a policy to create the National Examinations Council (NECO). Consequently, NBEM became the nucleus of NECO.

Secondly, they built NBEM’s capacity by employing additional qualified personnel. In addition, by acquiring more equipment and facilities. And also by upgrading the existing ones.

Thirdly, they ungraded NBEM’s capacity. Also, this upgrade was to meet international standards. However, NBEM got transformed into National Examinations Council (NECO).

NECO then began its maiden Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) in June/July 2000. 

NECO also successfully continued to discharge all the mandates of NBEM. Besides, the conduct of the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) without prejudice to the existing functions and powers of WAEC.

The enabling decree 33 of 1999 establishing the National Examinations Council (NECO) became an act of parliament.

How to Check NECO June/July SSCE Result

Did you take part in National Examinations Council (NECO) 2024 June/July (SSCE)? Indeed, NECO has released your results.

  1. Go to NECO result checking portal at https://result.neco.gov.ng/.
  2. Pick your exam year. i.e. 2021
  3. Pick your exam type. i.e. SSCE INTERNAL (JUN/JULY)
  4. Enter your Token Number and registration number in the columns.
  5. Finally, click on the check result button to access your NECO result.

However, follow the simple steps outlined above. Also, by now you should see your grades on each subject.

NECO Registrar, Godswill Obioma made a comment. He said 1,209,992 candidates sat for the examinations. And only 894,101 of the candidates got at least five credit passes. Thus, it includes Mathematics and English Language.

Also, he added, the Council has made special arrangements. This was for candidates who missed some papers because of the #EndSARS protests in some states.
