University of Tampa Requirements for Admission

What is the University of Tampa’s admission requirements? While there are a lot of pieces that go into a college application, you should focus on only a few critical things:

‣ GPA requirements

‣ Testing requirements, including SAT and ACT requirements

‣ Application requirements

In this guide, we’ll cover what you need to get into the University of Tampa and build a strong application.

School location: Tampa, FL

This school is also known as UT

If you want to get in, the first thing to look at is the acceptance rate. This tells you how competitive the school is and how serious their requirements are.

The acceptance rate at the University of Tampa is 48.7%. Of every 100 applicants, 49 are admitted.

This means the school is moderately selective. The school expects you to meet their requirements for GPA and SAT/ACT scores, but they’re more flexible than other schools.

If you exceed their requirements, you have an excellent chance of getting in. But if you don’t, you might be one of the unlucky minority that gets a rejection letter.

University of Tampa GPA Requirements

Many schools specify a minimum GPA requirement, but this is often just the bare minimum to submit an application without immediately getting rejected.

The GPA requirement that really matters is the GPA you need for a real chance of getting in. For this, we look at the school’s average GPA for its current students.

The average GPA at University of Tampa is 3.4.

(Most schools use a weighted GPA out of 4.0, though some report an unweighted GPA.

With a GPA of 3.4, University of Tampa requires you to be around average in your high school class. You’ll need a mix of A’s and B’s, and very few C’s. If you have a lower GPA, you can compensate with harder courses like AP or IB classes.

This will help boost your weighted GPA and show your ability to take college classes.

If you’re currently a junior or senior, your GPA is hard to change in time for college applications. If your GPA is at or below the school average of 3.4, you’ll need a higher SAT or ACT score to compensate.

This will help you compete effectively against other applicants who have higher GPAs than you.

SAT and ACT Requirements

Each school has different requirements for standardized testing. Most schools require the SAT or ACT, and many also require SAT subject tests.

You must take either the SAT or ACT to submit an application to University of Tampa. More importantly, you need to do well to have a strong application.

University of Tampa SAT Requirements

Many schools say they have no SAT score cutoff, but the truth is that there is a hidden SAT requirement. This is based on the school’s average score.

The average SAT score composite at University of Tampa is a 1170 on the 1600 SAT scale.

This score makes University of Tampa Competitive for SAT test scores.

University of Tampa SAT Score Analysis (New 1600 SAT)

The 25th percentile New SAT score is 1090, and the 75th percentile New SAT score is 1250. In other words, a 1090 on the New SAT places you below average, while a 1250 will move you up to above average.

Here’s the breakdown of new SAT scores by section:

Section Average 25th Percentile 75th Percentile
Math 580 540 620
Reading Writing 590 550 630
Composite 1170 1090 1250

SAT Score Choice Policy

The Score Choice policy at your school is an important part of your testing strategy.

University of Tampa has the Score Choice policy of “Highest Section.”

This is also known as “superscoring.” This means that you can choose which SAT tests you want to send to the school. Of all the scores they receive, your application readers will consider your highest section scores across all SAT test dates you submit.

For example, say you submit the following 3 test scores:

Section R W Math Composite
Test 1    700 300 1000
Test 2 300 700 1000
Test 3 300 300 600
Superscore 700 700 1400

Even though the highest total you scored on any one test date was 1000, University of Tampa will take your highest section score from all your test dates, then combine them to form your Superscore. You can raise your composite score from 1000 to 1400 in this example.

This is important for your testing strategy. Because you can choose which tests to send in, and University of Tampa forms your Superscore, you can take the SAT as many times as you want, then submit only the tests that give you the highest Superscore.

Your application readers will only see that one score.

Therefore, if your SAT superscore is currently below a 1170, we strongly recommend that you consider prepping for the SAT and retaking it. You have a very good chance of raising your score, which will significantly boost your chances of getting in.

Even better, because of the Superscore, you can focus all your energy on a single section at a time. If your Reading score is lower than your other sections, prep only for the Reading section, then take the SAT.

Then focus on Math for the next test, and so on. This will give you the highest Superscore possible.

University of Tampa ACT Requirements

Just like for the SAT, University of Tampa likely doesn’t have a hard ACT cutoff, but if you score too low, your application will get tossed in the trash.

The average ACT score at University of Tampa is 25. This score makes University of Tampa Moderately Competitive for ACT scores.

The 25th percentile ACT score is 22, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 27.

Even though University of Tampa likely says they have no minimum ACT requirement, if you apply with a 22 or below, you’ll have a very hard time getting in, unless you have something else very impressive in your application.

There are so many applicants scoring 25 and above that a 22 will look academically weak.

ACT Score Sending Policy

If you’re taking the ACT as opposed to the SAT, you have a huge advantage in how you send scores, and this dramatically affects your testing strategy.

Here it is: when you send ACT scores to colleges, you have absolute control over which tests you send. You could take 10 tests, and only send your highest one. This is unlike the SAT, where many schools require you to send all your tests ever taken.

This means that you have more chances than you think to improve your ACT score. To try to aim for the school’s ACT requirement of 25 and above, you should try to take the ACT as many times as you can.

When you have the final score that you’re happy with, you can then send only that score to all your schools.

ACT Superscore Policy

By and large, most colleges do not superscore the ACT. (Superscore means that the school takes your best section scores from all the test dates you submit, and then combines them into the best possible composite score).

Thus, most schools will just take your highest ACT score from a single sitting.

However, from our research, University of Tampa is understood to superscore the ACT. We couldn’t confirm it directly from the school’s admissions website, but multiple sources confirm that the school does superscore the ACT.

We recommend you call their admissions office directly for more information.

Superscoring is powerful to your testing strategy, and you need to make sure you plan your testing accordingly. Of all the scores that University of Tampa receives, your application readers will consider your highest section scores across all ACT test dates you submit.

For example, say you submit the following 4 test scores:

  English Math Reading Science Composite
Test 1 32 16 16 16 20
Test 2 16 32 16 16 20
Test 3 16 16 32 16 20
Test 4 16 16 16 32 20
Superscore 32 32 32 32 32

Even if your highest ACT composite score on any given test date was 20, the University of Tampa will combine your top section scores from all of your test dates to produce your Superscore. In this case, you can improve your composite score from 20 to 32.

This is crucial in terms of your testing strategy. You can take the ACT as many times as you want and then submit only the tests that give you the highest Superscore because you can choose which tests to send in and University of Tampa forms your Superscore.

Only that one score will be visible to the people who read your application.

As a result, if your ACT score is currently below a 25, we strongly advise you to prepare for the exam and retake it. You have a high probability of improving your score, which will increase your chances of admission dramatically.

Even better, the Superscore allows you to concentrate all of your efforts on a single segment at a time. If your Reading score is lower than your other sections, focus your preparation solely on the Reading section before taking the ACT.

Then, for the next test, concentrate on Math, and so on. This will result in the highest possible Superscore.

SAT/ACT Writing Section Requirements

Both the SAT and ACT have an optional essay section.

University of Tampa recommends that you take the SAT Essay/ACT Writing section. If you do well, they’ll consider your application to be stronger.

SAT Subject Test Requirements

Schools vary in their SAT subject test requirements. Typically, selective schools tend to requ
ire them, while most schools in the country do not.

We did not find information that University of Tampa requires SAT subject tests, and so most likely it does not. At least 6 months before applying, you should still doublecheck just to make sure, so you have enough time to take the test.

Final Admissions Verdict

Because this school is moderately selective, strong academic performance will almost guarantee you admission. Scoring a 1250 SAT or a 27 ACT or above will nearly guarantee you admission.

Because the school admits 48.7% of all applicants, being far above average raises the admission rate for you to nearly 100%.

If you can achieve a high SAT/ACT score, the rest of your application essentially doesn’t matter. You still need to meet the rest of the application requirements, and your GPA shouldn’t be too far off from the school average of 3.4.

But you won’t need dazzling extracurriculars and breathtaking letters of recommendation to get in. You can get in based on the merits of your score alone.

But if your score is a 1090 SAT or a 22 ACT and below, you have a good chance of being one of the unlucky few to be rejected.

What are Your Chances of Admission at University of Tampa?

Chances of admission with these scores: 48.7%

Note: Your admission decision relies not only on your GPA and SAT/ACT scores, but also on your coursework difficulty, extracurriculars, letters of recommendation, and personal statements.

This tool provides only a simplistic estimate of your chances of admission. Instead of treating this tool as a crystal ball, we recommend you consider the big picture of what your chance means:

‣ 80-100%: Safety school: Strong chance of getting in

‣ 50-80%: More likely than not getting in

‣ 20-50%: Lower but still good chance of getting in

‣ 5-20%: Reach school: Unlikely to get in, but still have a shot

‣ 0-5%: Hard reach school: Very difficult to get in

We recommend you apply to schools across a range of chances. Applying to some safety schools will guarantee you have a college to go to, while applying to some reach schools will give you a shot at getting into the school at the top of your range.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions on the University of Tampa.

Ques: How hard is the University of Tampa to get into?

University of Tampa is a perfect school for those who are looking for great academics and professors, a city feel, friendly students, good housing, and lots of things to do. You’ll never be bored in Tampa.

The school is across the Hillsborough River to downtown Tampa, and the rest of the city is filled with unique dining, activities, and shopping. Class sizes are small and professors create a relationship with the students.

The campus is a perfect size, too. One side of the campus to the other is about a 10-15 minute walk. Your classes are usually a 5 minute walk from the dorms. There are so many different activities/clubs to be involved in.

Ques: How hard is it to get into USF?

University of South Florida-Main Campus (USF)’s average GPA is 3.97. University of South Florida-Main Campus (USF) does require GPA.

This average GPA means University of South Florida-Main Campus (USF) is brutally selective – the most competitive applicants in the world are already applying to the school, in hopes of taking up residence in Tampa, and, somehow, you need to be better.

Generally speaking, if your GPA is not at least equal to 3.97 then University of South Florida-Main Campus (USF) may be a reach.

However, University of South Florida-Main Campus (USF) considers the ENTIRE application we can make up for a weak GPA with more factors that we’ll discuss b
elow. If your GPA is equal to or greater than 3.97, you’re sitting right in the sweetspot.

Ques: What is the University of Tampa known for?

UT is regarded as one of the nation’s best 387 institutions for undergraduate education by The Princeton Review. Only 15% of four-year colleges in the U.S. share this honor.

In 2020 UT was ranked the 17th and 20th top school for entrepreneurship studies for undergraduate and graduate students, respectively, by The Princeton Review

U.S. News & World Report consistently ranks UT in the top tier of the category Regional Universities (South), and for 2023 was included as a most innovative college.

The Sykes College of Business and UT’s nursing program were also named as top undergraduate programs, which are based solely on the judgments of deans and senior faculty members at peer institutions. in partnership with Entrepreneur magazine.

Since 2010 UT has been included on Forbes’ annual ranking of  America’s Top Colleges. The list is based on factors such as educational quality, graduation rates and career prospects.

UT has won 19 NCAA Division II (2)championships in baseball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball and beach volleyball and 111 Sunshine State Conference championships. UT’s student athletes compete on 22 varsity teams.

Ques: What is it like to attend The University of Tampa?

UT is a small, private university that strives on it’s small and intimate classroom experience. UT is there to help students who want to learn with 10 other students in the classroom and have a lot of one on one time with their professor.

UT does not have a football team and therefore lacks some school spirit.

Ques: What are the best reasons to attend the University of Tampa?

Academics- I am impressed with the faculty and the first year classes that my friends are currently in. I transferred in a lot of credits, so I am lucky that those were accepted and that now I am in challenging, yet spread apart upper level courses.

With the right mindset, taking a full 17 credits is not terribly overwhelming. Also, there are plenty of academically stimulating symposiums available if you are a part of the Honors Program, as well as opportunities for study abroad.

Finances- While it is a private school and it can be expensive, if you put in the effort in high school, UT will typically give a generous academic or athletic scholarship to compliment that.

Also, if you are a Florida resident, you may be eligible for scholarships/grants like FRAG (Florida Resident Access Grant).

Metropolitan Area- Tampa is a great mid-sized city with many ways to keep yourself occupied. The dining culture is also rapidly growing, so there are many flavors to try.

In recent years, the downtown area has grown, so places such as Riverwalk and Curtis Hixon Park are within easy reach. There are also plenty of sports teams to follow all throughout the year to keep yourself occupied.

Demographics- I like UT because of the varied student body that attends.

There are plenty of international and out-of-state folks who are a part of many different majors; their unique perspectives shape your educational experience even more than teachers sometimes (plus, they are just fun to hang out with after class!)

I hope some of these reasons will help you in your college decision.
